"Bonne Nuit Pauul is a short comic by illustrator Margaux Bigou. When Pauul gets dumped—via snail mail!—by his girlfriend Melaniaa, he leaves the house to get some fresh air. On his afternoon stroll, he passes by store windows hawking self-help books and caffeinated beverages to “warm your heart.” Instead, Pauul heeds mother nature’s call and ventures into the woods, which are getting weirder by the minute.
Bigou’s grotesque illustrations are printed in vivid, nearly lurid color. She captures Pauul’s emotional contortions, from “MIXED FEELINGS” to “I DON’T GIVE A FUCK - LOL -” to “I MISS HER SO BAAAD…”, with an eye for expression and movement. Through Bigou’s sharp detail, Bonne Nuit Pauul is a darkly funny examination of pain as mediated through consumer culture—from denial and irony to platitudes and easy comfort."
